Wheatley created the Duke De Richleau,a fictional character who appeared in 11 novels published between 1933 and 1970. Originally created for a murder mystery 'Three Inquisitive People',written and set in 1931 but which was not published until 1939.This the 10th of the Duc de Richleau novels, and the book in which Wheatley killed off the character - although he did reprise the character one more time in 'Gateway to Hell‘ (1970).
This the 8th of the Duke de Richleau novels.
Set in the period January,1894 - October, 1903.The continuation of the Duke De Richleau adventure novels.
The Duke de Richleau had British nationality. But why? Why should a French aristocrat renounce his country and live in exile? The answer lay in the Paris of the nineties; a world of superficial glamour, and under the surface, deep social and political trouble. The army, discredited by the Dreyfus case, was being purged. The young de Richleau, cadet and instructor at the military academy of St. Cyr,became involved in a conspiracy.A conspiracy to restore the French monarchy. The Duc de Vendome was secretly coached in his future role as King.
Then, the conspiracy was betrayed. The results: death for some. For Richleau, the life of a fugitive, but a fugitive who had declared a single-handed vendetta against the government; who was determined to rescue the Prince.
